FSEM 100 KK BANNED AND DANGEROUS ART

PAPER GUIDELINES

Short Papers
Three short papers on banned or censored works of art-one on a piece of visual art, one on a piece of music, and one on a work of literature, performing art, or film. For each paper, you should include the following:

• Provide a brief description of the work.
• Explain where, when, and by whom the work was banned/censored.
• Reconstruct and analyze the argument or presuppositions used to ban or censor.
• Make substantive use of at least one of the readings/theories we have studied to date.
• Evaluate the argument/presuppositions used to justify the action.

Papers should be 3 pages (12 point type, one inch margins, double-spaced) with proper citations. Points one and two above combined should constitute no more than one page of the paper. At least one short paper must go through a process of peer review. When you submit the peer reviewed paper, submit it with the comments of your peer reader and your assessment of those comments (see Peer Review Guidelines).

Short papers due as follows:
Visual Art-September 27
Music-October 23
Literature, performing art, or film-November 20.

Final Paper
In your final paper, you will research a work of art that was banned or censored in Fredericksburg, Virginia-or the Commonwealth as a whole-or Washington, DC., or in your home state or country. Building on the work you have done in your short papers, you will now develop your arguments about the nature of art and the conditions under which a work can or cannot be justifiably censored or banned. Your paper should take the following form:
• Statement of thesis and context.
• Brief description of the work and account of where, when, and by whom it was banned or censored.
• Reconstruction and analysis of the arguments used to ban or censor.
• Argument for your theory about the nature and value of art.
• Evaluation of those arguments used to ban or censor the work, grounded in your theory.

In this paper, you must make substantive and explicit use of the readings and theorists we have discussed in the course, placing your ideas in the context of and in response to those theories you have found to be particularly constructive, insightful, wrong. etc. As for your short papers, the description of the work and the actions taken with regard to it should not take more than a few pages. This paper should be 10-12 pages (12 point type, one inch margins, double-spaced).

First required draft due: November 8
Final paper due: 12 noon, Friday, December 7.

Peer review and additional readers
You are encouraged to seek peer review and additional readers for all your writing assignments but you must have a peer review for at least one short paper. Whenever you have someone else closely read and comment on your paper, that person should also fill out the review form. In addition, every student is required to do at least one peer review as part of your course participation grade. You are also encouraged to use the course blog to post ideas, sketch out arguments, and seek comments that might guide you as you draft your papers.

Drafts
I will read drafts of any papers you chose to submit. However, I must receive the draft at least ten days before the paper is due and I expect to be reading a full draft, not an outline or sketch of the paper. If you do not have a completed draft but would like to meet with me and discuss your ideas for a paper, that’s fine, too.
If you need written guidelines or additional help with properly citing sources, please do not hesitate to ask me.
